Abstract
1363790 Rotary positive-displacement machines PHILADELPHIA GEAR CORP 27 Dec 1972 [24 April 1972] 59600/72 Heading F1F [Also in Division F2] In a mechanism for rotating a shaft, e.g. the stem 35, Fig.4, of a butterfly or plug valve, comprising gear means such as worm and wheel 10, 11 for manual rotation of stem via coupled sleeves 52, 60, emergency rotation can be effected by firing an explosive in a hollow twisted tube 20 by local or remote means, to cause the tube to straighten and thereby rapidly rotate the stem in the valve opening or closing direction according to design. The tube may be directly incorporated in the drive between the gear means and the stem, Figs.1 and 3 (not shown) or may be isolated therefrom by a clutch 50 until the explosive is fired.
