Abstract

A handler for a long metal pipe covered in concrete and forming part of a submarine pipeline has gripping devices at the ends. Hydraulic rams or motors move the gripping devices longitudinally of the pipe. Pressure fluid for the rams is stored in an accumulator carried on the handler. The rams are hydraulically coupled to piston pumps which are operated by lift cables attached to the ends of the handler, so that lifting of the handler controls operation of the rams.
