Abstract

The reactor has a pressure vessel contg. a core cooled by a prim. fluid circulating in the vessel by natural convection and a heat exchanger for transfer of heat from the prim. to a sec. fluid. The reactor is modified so that the core contains a structure having interconnected vertical passages connected at their lower ends to a partly filled reservoir of a liq. neutron absorbent. This reservoir is located outside the pressure vessel, above the core and is associated with a device capable of modifying the gas pressure existing above the absorbent in the reservoir. The upper ends of the vertical passages in the core structure are connected to the top of the membrane accumulator also located outside the pressure vessel and above the core. These accumulators are supplied with prim. and sec. fluid respectively, the gas atmospheres in each being capable of connection to the gas atmos. in the absorbent reservoir. The reactor offers a high degree of safety, the reactor being stopped simply by connecting the gas atmospheres above the prim. and sec. fluid accumulators and the absorbent reservoir.
