Abstract

An electrical insulator is a non-woven fabric of polyester fibres contg. a chemical binder, the fibres having a denier of 4 (pref. 2). The fabric has on each face a surface skin which is of higher density than the inner region and which is formed by melting the surface fibres. The weight of the fabric is 150 gm/m2 (pref. 60-140 gm/m2) for a specific weight of 1.29-0.6 gm/cm3, and the porosity to air is 0.9%. The dielectric coefft. is >30 Kveff/mm. The fabric is cheap to produce and provides good dielectric insulation. It does not degrade on heating to produce water which increases its conductivity. The insulator is used for condensers, high tension cables, transformers etc.
