Abstract

A wattmeter forms a product of network a.c. voltage and network a.c. current. It has at least one magnetic core, to whose first winding the a.c. current is applied, or d.c. voltage through a resistor. Its second winding so controls the multiplier mark/space modulator, that it delivers a pulse voltage in which the ratio of the difference to the sum of pulse width and pulse spacing is proportional to the instantaneous value of the network a.c. current or voltage. An oscillator has a frequency much higher than the network frequency. It saturates the magnetic core whose second winding is connected through a differentiating element to a threshold switch generating the pulse voltage.
