Abstract

N,N'-Disubstd. sulphonyl-hydrazines useful as blowing agents for plastics and rubbers have the formula (I): R(SO2NR1NHR2)n (where R is hydrocarbyl; R1 is CONHR4;R2 is COOR3; R3 is hydrocarbyl; R4 is H or hydrocarbyl; and n is 1 or 2). Cpds. (I) decompose in a non-explosive, controlled manner at elevated temps. to release small amts. of nitrogen and larger amts. of carbon dioxide and gaseous hydrocarbon; do not attack the polymers or the appts.; can be used with a wide range of polymers, and esp. useful for expansion of polymers above 200 degrees C. Some cpds. can be used above 250 degrees C.
