Abstract

The access tower is mounted on the deck (2) of the fire fighting barge (1) through a universal joint (4). The tower comprises a four-sided column (5) of braced openwork construction. Each corner has a stay (10), braced onto the base platform (3) by a single-acting hydraulic cylinder (8). The cylinder circuits are connected together (18, 20, 23) in diagonally opposite pairs and are supplied by a hydraulic unit on the base. A valve, sensing inclinations of the tower, controls the feed to the cylinders to keep the tower upright. The remainder of the tower consists of a fire fighting head at the top, with a swivelling jib and stairways for the firemen.
