Abstract

A process for ensuring the adhesion of coatings, welds, etc. to parts contg. Ti at least at the surface is described. After degreasing and pickling the Ti surface is immersed in a bath contg. fluorides in an acid medium. The Ti surface is then rinsed in demineralised water at >=50 degrees C. Ti alloy surfaces can be treated to obtain good adhesion of organic or inorganic coatings such as paints, varnishes, enamels, cermets, or metals. The treated Ti surface is also suitable for welding or brazing. The first layer obtd. on the Ti surface is a Ti fluroide complex and the third treatment stage of immersion in an acidified fluoride bath removes this first layer allowing Ti hydroxides to form. TiO2 in the form of stable anatase is formed and shows excellent adhesion to polymeric adhesives e.g. polyimides.
