Abstract

Power generators may work at a constant rate, i.e. coal, oil fired or nuclear power stations, hence improving the overall efficiency, by the storage, during low energy demand periods, of heated water in large underground natural lakes. This smoothing of generation requirements is envisaged as covering the demand over the whole year, i.e. storage during the summer months against the high winter demand. The energy stored in this manner is utilised when required by heat pumps, water temperature being raised from about 80 deg. C to 120 deg. C - 140 deg. C. The stirling cycle may be used to provide mechanical conversion. Further storage is by dam and barrage.
