Abstract
A crosslinked material with an oriented structure is in the form of an ultra-thin film. It comprises >=1 monomolecular layer of a diamide with aliphatic chain. The amide gps. of the molecules comprising the monomolecular layer are interlinked via -CH2- and CH-CH bridges. The material is used to form dielectrics or protective coatings. The material is prepd. by reacting a monomolecular layer of a diamide with an aldehyde in acid medium. The diamide is pref. a substd. urea and the aldehyde HCHO or glyoxal. Pref. one or more layers of octadecyl-urea are prepd. e.g. using Langmuir-Blodgett technique and transferred to a substrate to form Y type multilayers. These are treated with the aldehyde which is either in soln. or in vapour phase in 2 stages, first at 20-70 degrees C, and then at 100 degrees C-120 degrees C.
