Abstract

The brightness control circuit, for instrument lighting (5V) in vehicles, has no transformer and used very little power but still gives overvoltage protection. The dc supply is coupled via a fuse and cut-out relay contacts to a pre-regulator stage. the pre-regulator consists of a series of transistor acting as chopper controlled by a comparator and feeding a series ballast inductor. The comparator compares the output of the inductor with the reference. The output of this pre-regulator is fed to a regulator which consists of a similar configuration of series transistor and comparator. The output of the regulator supplies the lamp.
