Abstract

Alkaline beta alumina is prepd. by homogeneously mixing alumina and an alkali carbonate, esp. of Na, powders to give a predetermined Al2O3:Na2O ratio; heating in an open crucible, cooling, crushing the mixt. obtd.; shaping; and firing in a chamber in which a Na-rich atmos. is created in the immediate vicinity of the parts. The chamber is heated to 1600-1700 degrees C for 30 min. to 4 h. then cooled to room temp. The chamber consists of an outer body into which the parts are placed, closed at its ends by plates, each plate contg. a vacity filled with an alkali carbonate, the lower plate resting on a base, and the upper plate being closed off by a cover. Alkali beta alumina is used as a solid electrolyte in electrochemical generators such as Na-S generators. A Na-rich atmos. is created in the chamber which compensates for any loss of Na from the parts. The compsns. are reproducible. The relatively low firing temp. gives increased furnace life.
