Abstract

Terephthalic acid is produced in improved yields by liquid phase oxidn. of p-xylene with oxygen(contg.) gas, in an aliphatic monocarboxylic acid (I), at 80-260 degrees C and 2-30kg/cm2, in the presence of a transition metal catalyst. After sepg. solid terephthalic acid from the liquid effluent from the reactor, >=2% by vol. of the liquid effluent is conc. by partial distn. in a suitable zone to reduce the (I) content to 10-50, pref. 15-45 wt. %. At least part of the new effluent thus obtd. is then treated at 10-40 degrees C, pref. 15-35 degrees C, with 1-10 pref. 1.5-5 times its wt. of water. After eliminating the solid prods. formed, the latter being recovered, washed and recycled to the reactor, at least part of the new effluent thus pumped from the solid prods. is recycled to the oxidn. reactor or sent to a unit to recover the catalyst, which is then recycled to the reactor.
