Abstract
In a process for purifying, modifying and raising the temp. of molten cast iron, by feeding in oxygen, the amt. of oxygen employed w.r.t. time is selected so that no smoke forms above the melt. The O2 is pref. fed into the melt until the desired saturation value or carbon equiv. is attained in the iron, or until the impurities are reduced to a desired level, or the temp. of the melt is increased by the required amt. The O2 is pref. supplied by a lance or a porous zone in the base of the vessel holding the melt, using max 0.15 Nm3 oxygen/minute. The process is pref. carried out in a cupola furnace. Due to the absence of smoke, no special fume extn. equipment or filtration devices are required.
