Abstract

4-Alkylidene-chromene-2-carboxylic acid derivs. of formula (II) (where R is H, halogen, lower alkyl (opt. mono- or polysubstd. by halogen, OH and/or lower alkoxy), or hydroxy (opt. etherified with a 3-5 C alkyl chain which may be substd. and/or by symmetrically linked via an ether linkage in the omega-position with a chromene structure of formula (II)); A is H, opt. substd. hydrocarbyl, NH4 or alkali(ne earth) metal; and R1 and R2 are H, lower alkyl, phenyl (opt. mono- or polysubstd. by halogen, OH, lower alkyl, lower haloalkyl, lower hydroxyalkyl and/or lower alkoxyalkyl) or cycloalkyl, or R1 and R2 are linked so as to form an alicyclic ring system), e.g. 4-benzylidene - DELTA2 - chromene-2-carboxylic acid methyl ester, are new cpds. Pref. (II; A = opt. unsaturated hydrocarbyl) may be treated with an oxidizing agent (the starting material or oxidation product opt. being converted into the free acid or into an ammonium or alkali(ne earth) salt) to give a 4-chromone-2-carboxylic acid cpd. of formula (I), e.g. 1,3-bis(2-carbomethoxy-4-chromono-5-yloxy)-2-hydroxypropane. (II) have oestrogenic or antioestrogenic activity. In addition, as indicated above, they are useful as intermediates for the known (DT 1543579) cpds. (I), which are useful for the treatment of disorders due to antigen-antibody reactions (esp. asthma and allergies).
