Abstract

An automatic flare includes a water joint formed by a dish-shaped assembly. The raised sides of the joint have, for opening and closing it, at least one cover with a skirt, or a bell, which can be raised by pivoting it on a horizontal shaft with an arm having a counterweight. The centre of gravity of the cover is able to pass in an intermediate position, between the open and closed position, above the axis on which the cover pivots. The cover rests accordingly against stops either open or closed. The shaft on which the cover pivots is located above the water level in the dish and its bearings are outside the stack. The flare stack safety valves open automatically when excess pressure develops in the retort, but do not close until it is intended that they should.
