Abstract

A static appts. for contacting fluids incorporates stationary elongated elements in which are channels extending over the whole of the length of the appts. These channels meet one another many times and >=1 of them is helicoidal. In one form, the appts. consists of a cylindrical tube in which is a cylindrical bar of dia. equal to the internal dia. of the tube. The bar has two sets of helicoidal channels in its surface, at 60 to 120 degrees to one another, and crossing many times. In another form, an external element has >=1 channel and an internal element in it. The internal element has >=1 helicoidal channel crossing the channel(s) of the external element, forming many points of contact on a virtual cylinder. The appts. is used for mixing viscous liqs., making dispersions and emulsions, dispersing a gas in a liq., atomising and projecting a liq. with a compressed gas, atomising combustible liq., countercurrent contact, liq.-liq. extn., washing, distn. The appts. is robust, simpler and less costly than existing appts., and gives high efficiency with moderate pressure drop.
