Abstract

In a system for retaining fuel needles (rods) in an array of these in the casing of a fuel element or assembly for a nuclear reactor, particularly a liquid metal-cooled, fast neutron reactor, comprising in known manner (a) a support member coaxial with the base of the casing and mounted vertically (b) a series of parallel rails the lateral ends of which can be accepted in vertical slots provided in the support member, the rails being (i) capable of immobilisation by locking means in the sides of the support member and (ii) taking the form of plane sheets each of which can co-operate with a parallel plane face, machined on the closure plug for the lower end of each fuel rod, by means of projecting pins engaging oppositely situated apertures, (d) a wire wound helically round each fuel rod for spacing and supporting these, the further improvement whereby (c) the plane face of each lower end closure plug for a fuel rod extends in a plane offset laterally relatively to the vertical axis of that fuel rod and each rail is locked laterally between two parallel rows of fuel rods extending from one end of the rail to the other. Provides improved locking of the fuel rods both axially and transversely.
