Abstract
An appts. for preventing errors in charging a nuclear reactor incorporates an upper grid above the core and parallel to the lower supporting grid. The upper grid has lateral openings for introducing control rods in line with their positions in the core, and a central opening for inserting the fuel rods, one by one. Passage through this central opening is prevented by bolts which open under the effect of cams carried on the control rods, so that a fuel rod cannot be charged until all the control rods have been inserted in the core. The fuel rod is charged through the central opening and then moved transversely into its place between two control rods. The appts. is partic. applicable in the case of an experimental reactor, in which the core is submerged under a quantity of water. Devices based on preventing incorrect engagement of the fuel element in its housing in the support grid or giving the heads of the elements different shapes so that a grab cannot pick up the wrong one, have been shown to lead to error. The invention avoids these disadvantages.
