Abstract
Acoustic material comprises a first layer of textile material forming the 'right' or facing side of the material and a second flexible, reflecting backing layer with a high density filler; the backing being made up so as to keep the textile in a given shaped profile. The facing layer is pref. tufted carpet, while the backing layer contains a reflecting thermoplastic compsn. attached to a flexible foam. The high density filler is selected from CaCO3, TiO2 and BaSI4. The backing material is applied as aq. dispersion or in the molten state to the reverse of the textile material as a powder and heated to melt it so as to form the reflecting layer. Used as carpeting for an automobile esp. for covering the gear box casing to reduce noise transmission to the car interior. the reflecting layer also serves to keep the carpet firmly in position during shaping.
