Abstract

Confinement of molten salt for a reactor i.e. contg. a fissionable element salt, by creating a transition zone between the liquid and solid phases of the salt - mixture in the vicinity of the metal reactor vessel and cooling the external wall of this below the salt mixture solidification temperature but above the temperature at which there is a risk of dissociation. Advantageously, the temperature of the solid phase is kept at 300 degrees-400 degrees C by recovering heat dissipated by the outer wall of the reactor vessel. Enables conventional metals and/or non-oxidising alloys to be used without the risk of chemical attack of or unacceptable thermal stresses in the pressure vessel.
