Abstract

An overheating prevention system for an I.C. engine (1) includes an oil pressure switch (13) connected by the terminal (16) to the conductor (14). The conductor (14) is connected to the thermal switch (12) fitted to the engine cooling system (4). The terminal (16) is connected in series to an override switch (18), a warning light (20) and to the positive terminal of the ignition coil (2). In the event of a failure of the cooling system causing the engine to overheat, the thermal switch short circuits the ignition coil by connecting it to earth and so stops the engine. A loss of oil pressure actuates the pressure switch (13) with the same result. The override switch cuts out the safety devices when starting the engine.
