Abstract

Upholstered unit e.g. bedding mattress with external naturally elastic sheath or envelope (18-20) and internal springing (10); features an envelope of lateral, upper and lower panels with the contained springs built into the envelope fabric. The unit retain its shape by virtue of this construction, and pref. the envelope (18-20) is of natural or synthetic plastics foam, or a polyurethane or polyvinyl based foam. Pref. the unit is of horizontally elongated rectangular hollow section; an insulating material (28) can be interposed between the springs and the external envelope, or alternatively an external decorative lining (29) can be used with the insulant locating between the liner and the envelope. Spring anchorage is contrived to the top and bottom flanks of the sprung unit and envelope access is provided via an opening (30) furnished with sliding clasp fastener.
