A glass-carbon coating is produced on a article by (a) heating an organic glass-carbon percursor matl. selected from halogenated linear polymers and natural organic polymers in an inert atmos. until decomposition to a pitch-like cpd. of approximate empirical formula CnHn, (b) blending with aromatic solvent to form a slurry (c) coating the article, and (d) baking the article in an inert atmos. to transform the coating to glass-carbon.
