Abstract
The shock absorbing support block, such as might be used for heavy engine mountings on board ship, consists of two metal U-sections (1, 2) with their free longitudinal edges interleaved, so as to leave an S shaped space between them. The space is filled with an elastomer (7). This form of construction ensures that applied tensile or compressive loads always result in some portion of the elastomer being in compression, the preferred loading for such materials. Large tensile forces can be prevented from opening of the U section by fitting transverse pin which take some of the loading. The blocks can be angled in the usual way to absorb vertical and horizontal loads and the U sections may be formed with re-entrant edge (18, 19) to air retention of the elastometer.
