Abstract

An irreversible shock absorber (i.e. for once-only use), for retarding a mass moving in a straight line, consists of a cylindrical structure which is axially compressed during the shock-absorbing stroke and which is constituted of short beams each laid with its ends resting on beams below; the bearing supports between successive beams along the line of action of the force are displaced laterally from the line of the force by a distance at least equal to one half of the length of a beam perpendicularly to the line of the force. In a prefd. arrangement, the cylindrical structure has all the supports between beams lying in a common cylindrical surface, the beams being curved so that each forms a sector of the cylinder, with openings between them. The shock absorber is used e.g. for braking safety vehicles or for arresting emergency shutdown control rods in a nuclear reactor.
