Abstract

The waveguide modulator may be used in integrated optical systems. The modulator includes a substrate (1) on which the waveguide (5) is deposited in the form of a strip; a first electrode (2) deposited on the side of the substrate furthest from the waveguide; an intermediate dielectric film (3) deposited on the waveguide; a second electrode (4) placed on this film (3); and a voltage source (7). The substrate (1) and the waveguide (5) are made from the same electro-optic material, e.g. lithium niobate, and the refractive index of the waveguide is slightly greater than that of the substrate, this being achieved by varying the orientation of the axes within the electro-optic crystal structure.
