Abstract

The flow passages are so shaped that noise is also reduced. The valve consists of an axially sliding portion (4), carrying a central tapered spigot (1) and surrounded by several annular rings (2, 3) projecting the same amount as the spigot. The latter controls the fluid flow at the seat (26) and it moves relative to the fixed cylindrical entry duct (22). This duct is also surrounded by annular rings (18) which interleave with those on the sliding part. All inside faces of the rings are cylindrical and all outside rings taper axially so that nozzles are formed rather than diffuser passages between the elements on closure. This feature prevents pressure recovery in the passages and keeps noise to a minimum. The valve is compact and relatively cheap to produce.
