Abstract

Equipment for transverse folding of continuous tubular flexible film to produce an envelope comprises >=1 concentric layers of tubing of any required length. The mouth of the tubing is led down over a mandrel which keeps the mouth open. Travelling clamps grip the tube surface at a level corresponding to twice the height of the required envelope and carry the gripped zone down to the vicinity of the mouth of the tubing. The clamps release the film surface and, if necessary, return to grip and carry down a further layer of film. The mandrel has a bulbous profile to cause the internal fold to progress smoothly. When the required series of overlaid layers is complete, the envelope is cut off and removed from the mandrel. The device is used for the mfr. of short film packs which may be gripped by one extremity and extended to cover goods previously positioned on a zone to be enclosed by the extuded pack. The film gripping and manipulation systems are effective and reliable for semi-automatic operation. The parck is removed for transport and storage flat, instead of remaining supported on a disposable mandrel.
