Abstract

Electric induction furnace for the continuous melting of metal, esp. steel, starting from scrap and pre-reduced ores, uses a ring-shaped or annular crucible which constitutes a single sec. turn in short circuit with several transformers, the prim. of each transformer being fed with alternating current and mounted on a magnetic frame through which the ring crucible passes, the frames being distributed at regular intervals round the ring crucible. The crucible is pref. fitted with means subjecting the melt to a magnetic induction sufficient for at least partial saturation, esp. by using bobbins round the ring crucible. The furnace is completely static, i.e. no tilting is required and it is very suitable for the recently developed steel making processes, avoiding the inconvenience which occurs in using arc melting furnaces.
