Abstract

Crude 11-cyano-undecanoic acid (I), e.g. from thermal cracking 1,1'-peroxy-dicyclohexylamine (II) at 300-1000 degrees C, is dissolved in organic solvent contg. >=1 6-8C aromatic hydrocarbon, prf. chosen from benzene, toluene, xylene, ethylbenzenes and mixts., NH3 is introduced, pref. at 15-60 degrees C, to convert acid (I) into NH4+ salt and salt is crystallised and sepd. out. Only small quantities of colouring impurities are isolated; (I) is obtd. in high yield. (I) on hydrogenating forms 12-amino-dodecanoic acid which forms Nylon 12 when polymerised.
