Abstract

Tiles, esp. for flooring, are produced by: (a) compressing a mixt. of finely-divided, e.g. powdered solids and water contg., (by wt.) 40-60% vermiculite, 25-40 % clay, 0.01-8% flux, opt. 8% wollastonite fibres and 10-20% water, to a tile having density 1.12-1.3 g/cc; (b) applying a glaze, pref. contg. mainly B2O3, SiO2 and CaO; and (c) burning the glazed, compressed mixt. at 1095-1205 degrees C for 0.5-4(2-4) hrs. The tiles have improved compressive strength and resistance to wear, density 1.44-1.92g/cc (below that of comparable standard prods) and a linear shrinkage on burning 4-10% and Taber wear index >20000.
