Abstract
The mussels, when removed from their breeding beds, are in clusters made up from lichens and mosses to which they are attached. Each mollusc should be detached from its support and all the impurities attached to its shell removed without tearing the ligament which joins the mussel to the remainder of the group. The new machine breaks up the clusters, sorts the mussels by size and removes the adhering parasites. It consists of a frame supporting a motor and reducing gear driving a cylindrical shell and a cylindrical sieve made from a series of circle of round bars. These are secued between end flanges. The mussels are introduced. A row of jets, fed with sea water, facilitate the flow of the charge down the inclined plane to the annular space between the inside of the shell, fitted with rods, and a steel sheet. The latter is equipped with a surface of bristles which clean the surface of the mussel shells without causing damage. The mussels are also sprayed with water from other rows of jets. The impurities lichens and small pebbles, as well as the small mussels are evacuated through a trough; the cleaned mussels are evacuated into a receiving tank. The various cleaning operations are effected with the min. of losses through tearing the filament or crushing the shells.
