Abstract

An optical amplifier used to increase the energy of optical light beams comprises an assembly with a flange (8) holding a disc (9) of light amplifying material. It also has a second flange (10) holding a disc (11) of material which can transmit useful wave-length light but reflect the wave-length light to be amplified. It has sound insulation (11, 29) interposed between the light source and the amplifying material (9) to prevent any deformation due to sound waves. The insulation includes a vacuum chamber (29) defined by the flanges (8, 10) and an annular bellows (28), the chamber being connected to a vacuum pump. Shock absorbers (12) are connected between the flanges.
