Abstract

The primary winding (2) of this variable transformer generates flux in a magnetic circuit that has a long open-circuit parallel air-gap. The secondary is wound on a yoke that slides along one of the parallel arms of the air-gap. The shape and dimensions of the material forming the air-gap cause the flux intensity along the secondary arm to decrease as a linear function. Thus as the secondary is moved along the arm, its output is a linear function of its position. The air-gap can be of linear, circular or helical shape. This gives a transformation ratio that has no discrete steps, a large range and is a linear function.
