Abstract

Spinning solns. contg. copolymers of acrylonitrile, unsatd. sulphonates such as allyl sulphonate and opt. other comonomers, made by soln. polymsn. of the monomers in DMF, are modified by the addn. of 0.01-1 wt % (on monomers + polymer) maleic acid. The maleic acid gives clear, cloud-free spinning solns. which give fault-free spinning over long periods with freedom from blockage of spinning nozzles, etc. The maleic acid may be added before the polymsn. or after removing the reaction mixt. from the polymsn reactor but before concn. The spinning soln. may also contain oxalic acid to bind Fe ions, to give fibres with a high degree of whiteness.
