is mfd. by thermal decompsn. of an AlCl3 soln. and use of the formed for the prodn. of the AlCl3 soln. by (a) using an AlCl3 soln. prepd. by treating Al foil with a purity of >=99.9, pref. 99.99% Al with regenerated HCl; (b) pref. first contacting with furnace waste gas and then contacting the soln. directly with a gas at 700-1300, pref. 750-950 degrees C, contg. =0.01 wt.% S, in the form of S cpds., obtd. by combustion of gaseous fuel, to evaporate and effect pyrohydrolytic decompsn. of the soln. to a gas phase contg. HCl and Al2O3 in one stage; (c) sepg. the Al2O3, contg min. 99.5 pref. 99.8% Al2O3, from the gas phase above its dew point; (d) absorbing the HCl from the gas phase, pref. adiabatically in water with an electrical conductivity of max. 10, pref. 2 uS/cm or a soln. of max. 5% AlCl3 and max. 5% HCl in this water; and (e) recycling the regenerated HCl to (a). The process allows prodn. of highly pure Al2O3 from solns. obtd. by etching Al foil, e.g. in the prodn. of electric condensers.
