Abstract

Method for fractionating mixts. contg. >=2 solids of low volatility by dissolving the mixt. in a first solvent (I) to a predetermined concn. (c), then adding a second solvent (II) able to modify solubility of the components aso as to cause pptation, and set up and equilibrium (E1) between dissolved matl. (S1) and pptate. (P1) is improved when (i) P1 is redissolved in (I), pref. at concn. C, then same amt. of (II) added to establish a second equilibrium, and procedure repeated to give finally a pptate; Pm, strongly enriched in the least soluble component, and solute Sm; and (ii) S1 is conc. by evaporation, pref. to conc. C, then (II) added to the concentrate (pref. same amt. as used initially) to establish a new equilibrium between solute (s2) and pptate. (p2) and this process is repeated until sm is produced strongly enriched in the least soluble component (sic) together with pm. Esp. for fractionating the condensed tannins (a catechol tannin T1 and 2 proanthocyanidol tannins T2 and T3) obtd. by extracting fresh cypress cones. T2, and much less so T3, have vasoconstrictor activity and both reduce capillary permeability at doses lower than rutin; R2 has highly selective action against the pain associated with acute haemorrhoidal crises (prophylactic or curative treatment of circulatory disorders of the legs) and T3 is useful for treating disordered vision caused by chronic circulatory disturbances. T2 and T3 have i.p. LD5o >1.5 g/kg.
