Abstract

The shaft has a sleeve which encloses molten sulphur which is maintained at a temperature between 170 deg.C and 200 deg.C. When the sulphur is in a viscous state. The sulphur in contact with the shaft remains in the liquid state due to friction, which results in a slight leak. To replace this leakage additional liquid sulphur is supplied which is cooled by water under pressure at a temperature of 180 deg.C. Since water vapour is inert with respect to sulphur there is no danger of the sulphur igniting at these temperatures as would be the case if the sulphur were in contact with air.
