Abstract

A device lifts sheets individually from the top of a pile of letters etc. The sheets are placed on a base (3) sloping in two directions between side walls (2). The base is moved between the walls, and a suitable control device is fitted to maintain the top of the pile at a constant level. A crosspiece (8) is fixed above the sheets and has openings (9) through which air is blown from a supply line (11). The piece is extended (12) towards the exit slot (7), and possibly also in the other direction (13). The jets of air create a depression above the top sheet, lifting it and pivoting it so that it is entrained through the exit slot. The sheets are then propelled by rollers (14, 15) into a conveyor (18).
