Abstract

A modified hopper for feeding granulated matl. into a screw injection moulding machine, where the hopper incorporates an ancillary reservoir from which a liq. colourant may be pumped and discharged amongst the granules entering the throat of the hopper. Avoids large scale premixing and consequent loss of colourant and/or base matl. in premix vessels or during transfer. Prodt. colour may be adjusted during the run to produce the required shade under the processing conditions of the day. The liq. colourant is pref. transferred through a flexible tube by a variable speed peristaltic pump. The pump speed may be automatically linked to the extruder screw speed to maintain the colour at different throughput rates.
