Abstract

1,208,476. Extrusion granulators. WERNER & PFLEIDERER. 31 May, 1968 [10 June, 1967], No. 26261/68. Heading B5A. [Also in Divisions B1 and C3] An apparatus for the continuous production of polyamides from dry starting materials comprises a screw conveyer 2 in which the starting material from storage tank 1 is melted, a gear pump 3 to aid the transport of the melt by way of pipe 4 to treatment chamber, which comprises a housing chamber 5<SP>1</SP> enclosing several sections (6a-6f, Fig. 2, not shown) being isolated from one another by sealing discs or by back feed threads (9) fitted on to the shafts of two meshing and self-cleaning screws (7 and 8) for transporting the melt in the chamber, at least one of the sections having a dome 10 (or 12) with a suction pump 11 (or 13) through which liberated gases or vapours are extracted and hence a vacuum applied, a pipe 14 through which additives may be introduced into the treatment chamber by screw 15 from tank 16 and a discharge section provided by housing section (6f) and a delivery device 17. The depth and pitch of screws (7 and 8) may be altered to control the throughput rate of the product and the speed of the screws and the temperature gradient can be controlled separately or conjointly for two or more of the housing sections (6a-6f). After leaving the discharge section the product may pass to an extruder and then to a granulator 29 for the extruded product via water bath 27 and drying cylinders 28.
