Abstract

The hair springs are used for balance wheels associated with electromechanical clock or watch movements, or moving coil instruments. To minimise the bending stresses on the conductor (9) which is fixed to the narrow edge of the coil spring (8) the former is arranged to lie along the neutral bending plane (19). As an element in this plane experiences neither tension or compression, as the spring flexes the resultant fatigue stresses in the conductor are minimised. In most applications the conductor is insulated from the spring and attached to it with a synthetic resin adhesive.
