Abstract

The machine tool has at least two spindles, one horizontal and the other vertical. As an example, a machine tool can have a workpiece (4) mounted vertically between centres to be machined by a number of tools on carriages (7, 8), and a second horizontal working axis of rotation using a chuck (6) to grip the workpiece. The spindles are driven by separate motors, permitting independent use. The horizontal spindle has an upper carriage (10) and a rotary slide (11) for the tools. The carriages are typically moved by hydraulic rams or screw jacks.
