Abstract
The electron beam is directed onto a thin disc (11) made from an electrically resistant thermoplastics, supported by a conductive substrate (12). The disc is displaced so that the electron beam traces a helical path to deposit a continuous track of electrical charges on the disc (11), the intensity of the beam being modulated in accordance with the wide-band signal. The beam is focused to produce a spot whose effective diameter, in the sense of progression along the track, being less than the wavelength of the shortest signal. The beam is subjected to astigmatism to elongate the spot in the transverse direction, so that its diameter is a fraction of the track width.
