Abstract

Heat-deformation of an Fe blank to a pre-determined shape, by hot-pressing at =816 degrees C. takes place by bonding surface of blank with an effective quantity of a glass lubricant via a pref. 0.5-10 mu-thick layer of Fe oxide, having compsn. approaching FeO and a wustite structure. The blank surface is pref. oxidised under controlled conditions to form desired Fe oxide layer, followed by applying glass lubricant. Process is for prodn. of parts requiring little or no further processing or finishing.
