Abstract

A number of supply rolls of fabric web are mounted on a carriage together with associated guide bars over which a web passing from a roll is fed to be picked up by a pair of moving jaws, the carriage being moveable pneumatically to maintain the web centralised with respect to the jaws. The jaws retain opposite edges of the web and their sepn. is adjustable to maintain the web stretched laterally. The jaws advanced the web through a cutter which trims the selvedge (the waste being removed through a waste pipe) and then over a detector which detects faults in the web and operates a marker downstream of the detector and which marks the faults with chalk. Finally the web is folded up. The detector is either an optical detector which monitors light passing through the web or an electro-mechanical transducer of which the magnetic flux is modulated by a fault. The output from the detector is amplified before being used to actuate the marker. The device is continuously fed with a fabric web and operates automatically and continually. The device operates more quickly than manual detecting and marking operations and reduces the likelihood of missing faults.
