Abstract

Low relief sculptured mouldings with a metallic skin on a reinforced polyester resin support, made by coating a mould with a light varnish to anchor a dressing of metallic particles applied by spraying, then coating the rear of the metallic particles with a secondary varnish which seals the interstitial pores without either penetrating the metallic layer or fully submerging the protuberances of the uppermost particles. The layer of polyester resin reinforced with glass fibres is then built up on the sealed face and cured. Seal varnish prevents the low viscosity polyester precursor resins from permeating the sprayed metallic coating and thus staining the moulding surfaces and/or fouling the mould.
