Abstract

A non-woven fabric is produced by advancing a fibre lap on e.g. a porous support past e.g. a nozzle which directs a fluid jet onto the lap and causes the fibres to deform locally and entangle. The machine is simpler and quieter than conventional needling machines. The fluid jets can also be directed at an angle onto the surface of the lap to vary the orientation of the fibres. Pref. the fluid is a liquid containing an additive which causes cohesion and so produces a fine jet, and the jet may be pulsed or continuous. Jets may be directed onto one or both faces of the fabric and the nozzles may be traversed across the lap.
