780,823. Forming fibre webs. CLARK, J. D'A. May 17, 1955, No. 14259/,55. Class 120(1) Relates to apparatus of the kind described in Specificat ion 668,216 in which fibres .are circulated in a fibre - depositing head 10 and showered through a foraminous wall 15 of the head, while entrained in an air stream, on to a second formainous wall 17. The rotary paddles of the earlier Specification are replaced by nozzles 23 directing a high-velocity air stream into head 10 in such a manner as to entrain the fibres in a circulating layer of air moving over wall 15. Air is withdrawn through a duct 19 from beneath wall 17, which is in the form of an endless screen so that the fibres collect in web form thereon; preferably, the amount of air drawn through screen 17 is slightly larger than the amount passing through wall 15 so as to cause a slight inflow of surrounding air into the space between wall 15 and screen 17. The openings in wall 15 may be in the form of a single slot etending across the wall, or a purality of slots, or they may form a screen or the like. Additional air jets, such as 24 may be provided directed radially, or at an angle between tangential and radial, into head 24 to induce turbulence in the air flow in the head so as to break up lumps of fibres; these jets may operate intermittently or may be oscillated across the head to prevent fibre accumulation on the surfaces of the head. A cleaning jet may also be directed against the outside of the foraminous wall 15.
